Orca Computing is a University of Oxford spin-off. It is developing quantum computing hardware based on light particles (photonics). Photonic quantum computers have some clear advantages. They use mostly existing telecom components for example and can run at room temperature without extensive infrastructure requirements. Furthermore, photons do not interact with the environment and are therefore much less sensitive to noise compared to other types of qubits. However, so far photonic quantum computers are not scalable because they need many redundant components to compensate for the fact that photons in the right modus can only be produced by chance. At the core of Orca's technology is a patented quantum memory that allows it to trap and release photons on demand. This core innovation could be the answer to the fundamental challenge of optical quantum computing and therefore enable high-quality, scalable machines for a wide range of purposes.
